John 14:16-18, 26; Acts 1:8
August 20, 2017
* Spirit as Person and therefore someone with whom we enjoy relationship and by whom we are united in relationship to the Father and the Son
* Spirit as Promise fulfilling the hope of the prophets and amplifying the Spirit-soaked ministry of Jesus, recorded in the Gospels
I. The Counselor’s Identity
The One who continues the Ministry of Jesus. The Spirit takes the once and for all of Jesus ministry and makes it the daily grace of all who trust Christ.
The presence of Jesus in the absence of Jesus
Continuation and amplification of Jesus’ work; an enlarging of Jesus’ work
Jesus CONTINUES his ministry through his people in Acts, and this is all through the Holy Spirit
II. The Counselor’s Work
With – 14:16-17
With us to reveal our sin and need of a Savior, and then raise us from the dead
Leading us, like the disciples, to the Cross
In – 14:16-17
Uniting us to God the Father and turning our lives into Temples of Worship
Glory cloud entering the Temple: new beauty, presence, holiness, refuge for others
Nicodemus: born of the Spirit
Upon – Acts 1:8
Empowering us for service in Christ’s Kingdom: dunamis
This power shows up in my place of profound weakness and need
Bezalel the artist: the first one with the Spirit upon him wasn’t an apostle but an artist who crafted works of beauty that made a space where God and people met together.
Everyday we bear witness in our work through the Spirit (the first Deacons in the church, handling the food distribution and the like, were ‘filled the Spirit’
The Spirit is here right now, at work on our souls. For some, this means that, like Nicodemus, you’re being made aware of how desperately you need a Savior, that you don’t need a second chance but a new birth.
For others, the Spirit is working to clean the rubbish out of the Temple, making holy what’s been profaned by our idols. For some, the Spirit is showing up to liberate you from every sense of shame and guilt you’ve been carrying, pointing you to the sufficiency of the Cross of Jesus.
There are some who at this moment sense the Spirit coming upon them in power to serve afresh the living God, no longer in their own strength but by the dunamis supplied by the Spirit of Jesus, unleashing creativity, witness, and love.
The Spirit is here, pointing us all to Jesus, glorifying him, saying to us all, “Come to him!”
Come down, O love divine, seek Thou this soul of mine,
And visit it with Thine own ardor glowing.
O Comforter, draw near, within my heart appear,
And kindle it, Thy holy flame bestowing.
O let it freely burn, til earthly passions turn
To dust and ashes in its heat consuming;
And let Thy glorious light shine ever on my sight,
And clothe me round, the while my path illuming.
Let holy charity mine outward vesture be,
And lowliness become mine inner clothing;
True lowliness of heart, which takes the humbler part,
And o’er its own shortcomings weeps with loathing.
And so the yearning strong, with which the soul will long,
Shall far outpass the power of human telling;
For none can guess its grace, till he become the place
Wherein the Holy Spirit makes His dwelling.
