Sealed with the Spirit: the Presence of the Future
Ephesians 1:13-14
September 10, 2017

Sermon series on the Spirit. “I remind you that there are churches so completely out of the hands of God that if the Holy Spirit withdrew from them, they wouldn’t find it out for many months”
― A.W. Tozer, Tozer Pulpit
Ephesians 1 as the anthem of praise to the Triune God:
The Father Arranges
The Son Accomplishes
The Spirit Applies

The presence of the Spirit in our lives is God’s living, breathing testimony to the redemption that is ours in Jesus. The Spirit with, in, and upon us now brings the presence of the future into our lives, a foretaste of what is to come.

The word for an engagement ring is used in the passage today, referring to the Holy Spirit.

Faith is a living, daring confidence in God’s grace, so sure and certain that a man could stake his life on it a thousand times. – Martin Luther

My friends, Redemption is both a ‘right now’ and ‘not yet’ reality. How do we have an assurance that the not yet will be fulfilled? Because of the right now presence of the Spirit.

Love as Christ loved the Church and gave himself up for her…

Our Bridegroom-Redeemer has not only pledged himself to us and us to himself by sealing the promise with his Spirit but also by sealing the promise through his blood. He died to make you his own. Think about that kind of love! The best of loves from the kindest of husbands is but a faint echo of such sacrificial love. How will he who did not spare his own Son for you, give you up?

How will he who has given you his own Spirit as the down payment fail to bring to full fruition what he has started in you?

We are his not because we are so strong – for we are weak – but because the strong Spirit of God is poured into our hearts. The seal on the tomb of Jesus was broken so that the seal of the Spirit on our hearts might remain forever. Amen.
